I am officially in packing mode as we gear up for our move from Savannah, GA to Fairbanks, AK. I’ve been organizing and cleaning for a couple weeks, but things are finally getting into the swing of things as we come up on our last days here.
Suitcases are being packed, and boy are there a lot of them. We will be going from swampy summers in the mid-90s in Savannah, Georgia to highs hovering around 70 in Fairbanks, Alaska. I. Am. So. Excited. But I also know there is a good chance everyone is going to want to wear much heavier clothes than the spaghetti straps and shorts we’re currently surviving in, so that means we’re all traveling with most of our full wardrobes. This is an adventure I am very much looking forward to. I’ve been dreaming of living in Alaska for years, and I never thought the Army would give us the opportunity! I am so excited to set many more stories in places like our new home!
Despite my fears that my husband’s return from deployment, the end of the kids’ school year, and the move would distract me from writing, it’s actually been a very productive few weeks. I am currently working on a concept I came up with a couple of years ago, and the preparations for our move have actually been very inspiring for my Alaska-inspired wolf contemporary fantasy. It seems I have to have an animal theme in all of my more recent manuscripts, so why not include one of my very favorites?
(Have I ever mentioned my childhood obsession with a wolf documentary? Probably not. And for everyone’s sanity, it’s probably wise to keep it that way)
Anyway, it’s going very well, and I am hoping I can keep up the momentum while I wait for my next round of edits from my agent. My fingers are crossed we are getting close to having A Becoming of Darkness ready to go out on submission! It’s one of my favorite stories, and I would love for its twisty, gothic pages to hit editors’ inboxes as we enter spooky season.
It’s been six weeks since A Burden of Ice and Bone released! I have been trying my hand at new marketing techniques (and probably failing), as well as new social media endeavors. I don’t consider myself much of a content creator—I am shy and I tend to overthink things times a billion—but I have managed to put together some TikTok videos and Reels that I am pretty proud of. I don’t know that either have helped much with book interest, but I think they turned out great! This one has been my favorite so far, and if you’d like to see more, check them out on my Instagram or TikTok.
And in a slightly uncomfortable note: if you pre-ordered a copy of A Burden of Ice and Bone straight from my publisher (that was the only way to pre-order a paperback version) and did not receive it, please contact them to let them know it hasn’t arrived here. There was apparently an issue with the distributor, and some books have not made it to their rightful homes.
My goal from here on out is to write more about writing, not just updates about books interspersed with military life. If there is anything you have been wondering about my experience with writing, publishing, or the agent-query process, please let me know!
